JKUAT Hosts Inaugural Talent Show

Not many know what their talent is, let alone whether they have a talent in the first place. I for one don’t know whether what I do with ease can be called a talent. But friends say am good with puns. The competitive nature of the modern world has led many to believe their talent is academic prowess and scooping awards at various education levels. There are many things that demand our attention nowadays that we forget to search within ourselves for that one thing or things we enjoy doing and do it very well. Discovering ones talent is just the beginning. Finding platforms to showcase the talent is a hard nut to crack because of the competitive nature of the various industries under which these talents fall. The entertainment industry however is the hardest sector to have a breakthrough due to the huge number of people involved in the making of a single entertainment product.
JKUAT started off the month of love by giving talented students a platform to showcase what they love doing at the JKUAT Talanta, an event organized by the Students Union-JKUSA and the Dean of Students Office. From 1400hrs to 1900hrs, various artists took to the stage to entertain the jubilant crowd of students with artists ranging from musicians to spoken word artists to dancers. Local celebrities graced the event with the highlight being TV host Tony Mwirigi from TV47. The presenter said he would take the best three performers at the event and guide them through the world of entertainment to help them professionalize their craft.
The Dean of Students Dr. Wanzala congratulated the organizers of the event and said that her office was always ready to support such student-led initiatives to improve the welfare of the students. “I urge you not to take your talents for granted and to always improve on them.” She further said that the University would in the near future launch a program- Women in Information Technology and encouraged all female students to join. Doing so will equip them with skills to become job creators and not job seekers, making them holistic students once the leave the university.
Accompanying the Dean of Students were visitors from Light for the World, a disability inclusion NGO implementing a job and entrepreneurship readiness program in collaboration with the Standard Chartered Bank. The visitors also brought with them Paul Mugambi, a visually impaired disability inclusion activist who challenged students to change their attitude towards people with disabilities.
The JKUSA President thanked the Entertainment secretary James Sifuna (Pine) for the platform accorded to students to showcase their talents and advised students to be attending other JKUSA events when called upon.
