Course of the week- B.Sc Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineering is the application of laws of solid mechanics, fluid mechanics and thermal sciences to the analysis, design and/or manufacturing of systems and products. Mechanical Engineers are concerned with the principles of force, energy, and motion.

The program emphasizes on application of mechanical engineering concepts, particularly in design, materials, manufacturing, and maintenance.  A student taking Mechanical Engineering course at JKUAT may specialize in either automotive or production engineering.  There is a very strong emphasis in a practical hands-on training of engineering, which is achieved through workshop practice courses and industrial attachments as well as through supervised projects.

Course Duration

The Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering course at J.K.U.A.T spans over five (5) academic years with two (2) Semester Sessions in each year. Each academic year covers an average of 16 Units of coursework.

In addition, every student is required to undertake practical attachment during the second, third and fourth year of study for a period of not less than 8 weeks.

Minimum entry requirements:

The following are the Requirements for admission into the degree program:

  • KCSE Mean grade C+ (plus) and mean grade for the total score in the four KUCCPS cluster subjects of at least B (plain) and the following minimum grades in the individual cluster subjects: Mathematics C+, Physics C+, Chemistry C+, Geography or Biology, or 2nd group III, or any group IV.
  • A’ level from the examination body approved by Senate with at least three principal Pass of nine (9) points and above in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Geography.
  • Holders of an Ordinary Diploma with Credit pass in a relevant field shall be admitted in the second year of study.
  • Higher National Diploma (HND) holders in a relevant field shall be admitted in the third year of study.

NB: All Diploma holders MUST meet the basic entry requirements at KCSE level or A’ level.
