Course of the Week- B.Sc. Medical Laboratory Sciences

A medical laboratory scientist (MLS), also referred to as a clinical laboratory scientist, medical laboratory technologist or medical technologist, is a healthcare professional who performs diagnostic analyses on body fluids, as well as other specimens. The B. Sc. Medical Laboratory Sciences is a professional course under the umbrella of the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board (KMLTTB).

It is offered by the College of Health Sciences (COHES) under the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences.

Admission Requirements

  • The candidate must have a minimum KCSE mean grade of C+ (plus). In addition, a student must have either of the qualifications listed below:
  • Have the following combinations of cluster subjects at the minimum grades shown:

Alternative A

  1. Biology C+ (plus)
  2. Chemistry C+ (plus)
  3. Mathematics or Physics C (plain)
  4. English/Kiswahili C+ (plus)

Alternative B

  1. Biological Sciences C+ (plus)
  2. Physical Sciences C+ (plus)
  3. English/Kiswahili C+ (plus)
  • Have a minimum of 2 principal passes in science subjects in IGCE/GCE.
  • Have a Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology or any other relevant Diploma from an institution recognized by the University Senate, and registered with the KMLTTB.

Applicants, who hold the above qualification from a middle-level institution recognized by the JKUAT Senate, may at the discretion of Senate be admitted directly to the upgrading module.

  • Have a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Medical Laboratory Technology or any other relevant HND from an institution recognized by the University Senate, and registered with the KMLTTB.

Applicants, who hold the above qualification from a middle-level institution recognized by the JKUAT Senate, may at the discretion of Senate be admitted directly into the upgrading module.

  • Have any other qualifications accepted by the University Senate as equivalent to those listed above

Credit Transfer System

Students who have successfully completed one or two years of a B.Sc. MLS level study in any institution recognized by the Senate may be allowed to transfer to the JKUAT B.Sc. Program, and shall be considered for appropriate credits based on the years of study in the institution(s) they are transferring from.
