Congratulations on securing your spot at one of Kenya’s leading institutions of higher learning, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. This marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter filled with learning, discovery, and personal growth. Starting university is a big step, and it’s normal to feel a mix of emotions excitement, uncertainty, maybe even a little homesickness. But rest assured, you’re not alone. Thousands have walked his path before you, and before long, JKUAT will feel like home.

To help make your transition smoother, we’ve compiled 15 essential tips that every fresher should know. From navigating the vast campus to making the most of your student life, this guide is here to get you started on the right foot.

1. JKUAT is Huge – Here’s How to Navigate it
JKUAT is spread out, and it’s easy to get lost during your first week. You can browse JKUAT buildings online through the university website or Google Maps to familiarize yourself with key locations ahead of time.
Still unsure where to go? Visit the Customer Service Office located at Administration Block A, Ground Floor. The staff there are always ready to assist you with directions, student service issues, or any campus-related concerns.

2. Class Timetables Can Change
Timetables are subject to changes, especially in the first few weeks of the semester. To stay updated, ensure you’re added to your class WhatsApp group, where most timetable updates, venue changes, and academic announcements are communicated by class reps or departmental staff.

3. Orientation is More Than a Formality
Don’t skip it! Orientation sessions are essential for understanding your department, university guidelines on examinations and academic progression, and campus safety measures. You’ll also get to meet your lecturers and learn about key support services such as the Library, Hospital Services, and IT support.

4. Know Your Student Portal Inside Out
From registering units to checking fee balances, your student portal is your new best friend. Ask a senior to show you around it if you’re stuck. If the technical issues persist, visit the IS office at the Institute of Energy and Environmental Technology (IEET) building or your School Admin for further assistance.

5. There’s Wi-Fi on Campus – But It’s Not Everywhere
JKUAT offers free campus Wi-Fi, but signal strength varies depending on where you are. Best places for reliable internet? The library, Science Common Complex (SCC) buildings, Technology house, Institute of Energy and Environmental Technology (IEET) building, and selected surroundings around the campus.

6. Food Options Are Plenty – But Budget Wisely
From the Students’ Centre (Studeez) and  Student cafeteria (Mess), to fast food spots around Main gate, Gate B and C, you won’t go hungry. That said, campus food is a blessing and a trap plan your weekly meals to avoid spending everything by Wednesday.

7. Don’t Lose Your Student ID – You’ll Need It Daily
For library access, exams, the mess, or even entering the university premises. Keep it safe and accessible.

11. Security is Good – But Stay Alert
JKUAT is generally safe, but don’t take chances. Avoid walking alone at night in poorly lit areas, and always secure your hostel rooms.

12. The Library is More Than Just Books
Yes, it’s where you go for research and quiet study, but it also has e-resources, discussion rooms, and helpful staff to guide you.
