JKUAT Shines at Regional Drama Festivals
The JKUAT Drama club delivered an outstanding performance in the just-concluded regional drama festivals held at the Kenyatta University Kitui campus. JKUAT displayed nine performances, all of which have qualified for the National Festivals set to take place this April at Afraha School in Nakuru.
Overall, JKUAT was ranked the best public university and second among private universities. One stellar performance was the narrative “Mafundi” by Vodaphone Sewe and Wetsuli, performed by Yvonne Ndida, a 1st Year Bachelor of Corporate Communication student, and Victoria Wanjiku, a 1st Year BSc in Renewable Energy and Environmental Physics student. Mafundi, which explores the struggles of university students who make poor decisions, even as their entire village pins its hopes on their success, was ranked as the best narrative.

A modern dance by Judith Adhiambo, exploring the relationship between humans and animals, secured second place. Joseph Nganga’s mime also earned a second-place finish, while Benedict Mutua’s spoken word performance was awarded the same ranking. A play on organ trafficking by Bravin Ouma was named first runners-up, as was a cultural creative dance on Luo-Kikuyu integration, performed by Phelisha Muthoni, Priscilla Kanyuaigwa, and Jessicah Siah. Additionally, a solo dance by Gift placed third, a solo verse by Elaine Adhiambo claimed second place, and the comedy Stomach Revenge by Sammy Boge was ranked third.
All the above items were polished and overseen by the clubs’ matron, Ms. Beatrice Kamonjo, Assistant Registrar office of career services, and the patron Mr. George Kasmil, Lecturer from the Department of Media Technology and Applied Communication in JKUAT, accompanied by long-time drama trainers John Wainaina and Keree Lamech.

After receiving the awards, Ms. Kamonjo expressed her excitement in seeing JKUAT shine, saying, “This is a testament to the incredible creativity of our students and proof that JKUAT is the best university for nurturing talent. A big thank you to the JKUAT management for their unwavering support of the arts.”
Meanwhile, Mr. Kasmil shared his confidence about the next stage, stating, “This is just the beginning. We are fully prepared for the nationals, and we are bringing all the trophies home!”
With such an incredible performance at the regional level, all eyes are now on Team JKUAT as they prepare to dominate the National Festivals in Nakuru!
