JKUSA Hosts Inspiring Career Development Talk at the JKUAT Karen Campus
The Office of the Academic Secretary, Jomo Kenyatta University Students Association (JKUSA), successfully hosted a Career Development Talk on Monday, 23rd February 2026, at the JKUAT Karen Campus. The session brought together students and industry professionals for an engaging and practical discussion on navigating the transition from campus life to the professional world.
The event attracted approximately 150 students, demonstrating a strong commitment from the students to personal growth and career advancement. The impressive turnout reflected an increasing awareness among students of the need to prepare proactively for an ever-evolving and competitive job market.
The talk was officially opened by the Dean, School of Law, Dr. Stephen Aminga, who underscored the importance of discipline, intentional career planning, and aligning academic training with industry expectations.
“I encourage all of you students to take advantage of such platforms to sharpen your professional focus and prepare strategically for life after graduation,” said Dr. Aminga.
His remarks set the tone for a forward-looking and impactful session centered on growth, readiness, and opportunity.
The event featured a distinguished panel of professionals who shared practical insights and personal career journeys, including Mr. Paul Mugambi, Group Head of Regulatory & Public Sector Engagement at Baobab Circle Limited; Dr. Kennedy Senagi, Postdoctoral Research Fellow and Data Manager at the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology; and Mogesi Joel, a Lawyer and Legal Analyst specializing in Commercial Disputes, Arbitration, Finance, and Investment.
Speaking during the session, Dr. Kennedy Senagi noted that the job market increasingly rewards graduates who combine technical expertise with adaptability and strong problem-solving skills. “Build your competencies beyond the classroom, employers are keen on individuals who can demonstrate initiative, analytical thinking, and the ability to translate knowledge into practical solutions,” said Dr. Senagi
Drawing from their diverse fields, the speakers provided students with a realistic perspective on workplace expectations, career progression, and professional growth. They emphasized the value of adaptability, continuous learning, and strategic positioning in today’s job market.
Key discussion areas included aligning academic preparation with employer expectations; strategies for securing internships and entry-level opportunities; the development of both technical and soft skills; professional branding and networking; and adapting to industry competition and workplace realities.
An interactive Q&A session allowed students to engage directly with the panelists, seeking clarity on specialization pathways, skill prioritization, and industry readiness. The vibrant exchange highlighted the importance of open dialogue between academia and industry and further enriched the learning experience.
Beyond individual career guidance, the Career Development Talk strengthened university–industry linkages by providing mentorship exposure and encouraging proactive career planning. The presence of senior university leadership also affirmed the institution’s commitment to holistic student development and career preparedness.
