Varsity holds MCK Accreditation Drive for MTAC students.

By Maroa Lucas,

The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) in collaboration with the department of Media Technology and Applied Communication (MTAC), JKUAT held a workshop on 3rd March 2022 that was channeled towards introducing the young JKUAT communication students into the media council. The event was embodied in one big theme, ‘Media Council Accreditation Drive,’ chaired by the department’s head, Dr. Joan Gathoni Mutua.

Accreditation promotes and enhances ethical and professional standards amongst journalists and media practitioners. MCK’s mandate is to not only register but maintain a register of accredited journalists, media practitioners, media enterprises, and sector stakeholders. The visit by the council was to recognize the students’ status as media practitioners, register and renew press cards for old members, both Staff and Students. It was facilitated by a team from the council led by Ms. Clarice Atieno, researcher and Documentation Assistant, MCK.

“I urge you all to visit the council’s website and have a look at the journalist’s code of conduct. It will guide you on how to apply for press cards,” Ms. Clarice Atieno encouraged the students.

The council provides the following services;

Academy which deals with curriculum development of the media related courses.

Adjudication which handles media disputes,

Advisory that deals with advising the government on matters concerning media,

Advocacy that oversees safety and free practice of journalism in the country and finally

Analysis that works on sorting media content.
