COURSE OF THE WEEK: BSc. RADIOGRAPHY

As a diagnostic radiographer, you will use some techniques and technology in order to identify the cause of the patient’s illness or injury. To be able to perform these tasks you will use Machines like the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machines, ultrasounds, and X-rays.

What is required of you to enroll in the course? The minimum entry requirements (Direct entry) are K.C.S.E C+ (plus) mean grade in addition the applicants must have the alternative combinations of cluster subjects Biology C+, Physics C+ Mathematics/Chemistry C+ English/ Kiswahili or B- in biological sciences B- in Physical sciences and a C+ in English/Kiswahili. Bachelor of Radiography (upgrading module) is offered part-time and applicants must have a diploma or HND in medical imaging science.

Bachelor of Science, Radiography is one of the most marketable courses in Kenya today. It is a clinical course that takes 4 academic years, a full-time mode of study.

The course also offers the opportunity to O – level students and diploma holders from recognized institutions or holders of a Higher National Diploma (HND) in imaging Science. The course not only, positions you to prevent the patients from becoming seriously ill but also gives you a chance to learn and master the use of highly innovative technology. Most patients will undergo a diagnostic assessment before getting treatment hence radiography plays a major role in improving the well-being of a patient. At the end of the day, Doctors need an accurate radiography test to ensure that diseases are caught in time and patients are given the best treatment.

The clinical part of the course requires students to go for rotations in a progressive manner in the hospital radiography department. In the final year, students do a research project on a topic related to radiation sciences and medical imaging that interest them.

Upon successful completion of this degree, a graduate can apply and register as a diagnostic radiographer or become a member of the Society of Radiography in Kenya.
